The Eastern Region of Ghana is a rich blend of dramatic landscapes, historic relics and traditional cultures. Ancient culture blends with modern in this region which is close in proximity but in sharp contrast with Accra.The region is dominated by Lake Volta, one of the world's largest man-made lakes, and the Akosombo Dam, the source of Ghana's hydroelectric power. Both are worth a visit. A favorite excursion is the weekend trip to Dodi Islands.

Aburi Botanical Garden Only one hour away from Accra, are the Aburi Botanic Gardens located on the Akwapim Hills. The impressive gardens do not only have a rich collection of tropical flora but also fauna, as the plants attract many birds and butterflies. Just as the photogenic palm tree avenue are many other trees and flowers labeled. The Akwapim hills are not only a beautiful surrounding for the gardens, but are also a cool environment compared to Accra, which on clear days you can see in the plains below.

The Dodi Princess Ferry The Volta Lake is one of the world’s largest man-made lakes, created in 1965. It supplies hydro-electric power to many parts of Ghana and even some neighboring countries. The Lake offers a wide variety of activities; canoeing, water sports, a cruise on the Volta River and a tour of the Volta / Akosombo dam. The ferry is a five hour cruise on the Dodi Princess to the fascinating Dodi Island, with two hours on the island and a meal on the ship.
